Are you making the most of Autopilot? Discover the Pod’s intelligent sleep assistant

One of the biggest culprits of poor sleep is sleeping at the wrong temperature. Your body follows a circadian rhythm that adjusts your internal temperature when it’s time for bed: generally your core body temperature decreases to help you fall asleep, and drops even lower throughout the first half of the night when you get most of your deep sleep. During the second half of the night, your body temperature starts to increase and this is when you get most of your REM sleep. However, the temperature in most bedrooms doesn’t adjust along with what your body needs. That can lead to less deep and REM sleep — and plenty of wake-ups. This is where Autopilot steps in to help.

What is Autopilot?

Behind the Pod, or better said, powering every key function of the Pod is Autopilot: a collection of proprietary algorithms developed by Eight Sleep to create an individual blueprint of each sleeper to create the environment you need for your best sleep.

Trained on 1.2 million hours of sleep, these algorithms require complex processing to correlate multiple variables into one dynamic picture of who you are as a sleeper and what you need to get the best rest possible.

With the expert help of Autopilot, your Pod’s temperature will cool down or warm up your bed to coordinate with your sleep stages. By regulating your temperature with each sleep stage, Autopilot actually helps you maximize time in each sleep stage for balanced sleep.

The core Autopilot algorithm takes a variety of factors into account when creating your sleeping profile each night, including:

  • Amount of deep sleep you need tonight based on last night’s sleep

  • Amount of REM sleep you need tonight based on last night’s sleep

  • Your current sleep stage

  • Changes in your environmental temperature

  • Your preferred bed temperature at each phase throughout the night

  • Your biological sex

  • Your age

After considering the above factors, Autopilot automatically adjusts your Pod’s temperature to help you get better sleep. As any of these factors changes, Autopilot learns, so it can adjust as needed to keep the user at the perfect temperature.

For example: if your room is 5 degrees Fahrenheit colder one night, Autopilot will automatically adjust the Pod’s temperature settings to be warmer so that you sleep comfortably.

Introducing Autopilot 3.0, the most insightful version to date

We’ve continued to push Autopilot innovation further by releasing Autopilot 3.0 earlier this month.

Trained on over 1.2 million hours of sleep, Autopilot 3.0 is hyper-personalized and responsive so that you can sleep better than ever:

  • Autopilot 3.0 reviews your sleep trends and personal patterns minute by minute, making temperature adjustments to help you get more time in each sleep phase.

  • It does this in real-time, but also by reviewing your previous night’s sleep to learn what sleep phases you’re running low on.

  • Lastly, and most importantly, it considers your biological sex when making temperature selections, plus over a dozen other factors from previous Autopilot versions like local weather, sleep preferences, and more.

Ready to try it out?

  • Autopilot 3.0 is only available as part of the Eight Sleep membership. If you have the membership, make sure you have Autopilot turned on. Go to “Your temperature” → and make sure you see “Autopilot is active” below your temp dial.
